Solana Mobile begins shipping the upgraded Seeker phone to over 50 countries, featuring onchain security and decentralized app store.
Solana Ships Second-Gen Seeker Mobile Device to 50+ Countries
Solana Mobile has commenced shipping its second-generation mobile device, the Seeker, to users across more than 50 countries. The device has already garnered significant attention, with over 150,000 pre-orders, a figure that substantially outpaces the sales of its first-generation Saga phone. The Seeker boasts upgraded hardware and an integrated mobile-native crypto wallet. It also features a decentralized application store designed to circumvent the "cryptophobic censorship" often encountered on traditional app marketplaces. Emmett Hollyer, General Manager of Solana Mobile, emphasized the Seeker's on-chain capabilities as its key differentiator. The Seed Vault, a notable feature, offers hardware-level security by isolating private keys, seed phrases, and sensitive information from the application layer while still facilitating app interaction. Solana Mobile is targeting both developers and cryptocurrency enthusiasts with the Seeker. Developers can leverage an alternative app marketplace that bypasses the high fees charged by app stores like Google and Apple. Crypto users, in turn, can anticipate an enhanced mobile experience for managing NFTs, engaging in gaming, and utilizing decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. The Seeker is available at two price points, $450 and $500. Solana Mobile, a subsidiary of Solana Labs, forecasts that these sales will generate at least $67.5 million in gross revenue. In comparison, the first-generation Saga device sold 20,000 units, with initial sales being slow until the inclusion of memecoins on the phone boosted its appeal.TEEPIN Architecture for Decentralization and Security
The Seeker incorporates TEEPIN (Trusted Execution Environment Platform Infrastructure Network), a three-layer architecture that decentralizes critical device functions, including access and app distribution. This system interconnects hardware, verified software, users, and network Guardians to establish a decentralized mobile platform. In contrast to conventional mobile devices that retain centralized elements like app stores and security measures, TEEPIN is built on the core principles of decentralization fundamental to Web3. Furthermore, TEEPIN enhances security through cryptographic attestation, allowing the device to cryptographically prove to the network that it is running legitimate software.App Store Rule Softening Amid Antitrust Pressure
Apple, a major technology company, has been under antitrust scrutiny for its restrictions on developer-user communication and commission charges on off-app purchases. A recent court ruling, stemming from the Epic Games lawsuit, was seen as a victory for crypto app developers, granting them permission to link to NFT collections or external payment systems without incurring Apple's commissions. Centralized app stores have also faced challenges with regulatory rulings, leading to the removal of certain crypto applications. For instance, Google Play removed 17 unregistered crypto exchanges in South Korea.Source: Cointelegraph
